The 40-hour HAZWOPER course covers OSHA’s Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response
(HAZWOPER) regulations. The course meets the criteria of OSHA regulation 29 CFR Part 1910.120, which
states that personnel must undergo HAZWOPER training before beginning work at an uncontrolled
hazardous waste operation.
HAZWOPER training prepares cleaning and emergency response personnel to work safely in a variety of
hazardous-substance circumstances. This course addresses policies, strategies, and procedures for
reducing the risk of injury and sickness at work due to hazardous exposures.
Who requires OSHA’s HAZWOPER 40-Hour Training?
Workers who conduct activities that expose or may expose them to hazardous substances must
complete the HAZWOPER 40-hour course.
Workers involved in clean-up operations, volunteer clean-up activities, emergency response operations,
and the storage, disposal, or treatment of hazardous chemicals or uncontrolled hazardous waste sites
should take this course.
Protection against hazardous chemicals, removal of hazardous chemicals, worker and environmental
safety, and OSHA standards are among the topics covered. The subjects covered in this course are those
found in 29 CFR 1910.120.
Please note that the 40-hour Hazwoper course requires 8 hours of hands-on training, which can be
conducted by a registered instructor. The student’s current or potential employer is responsible for the
three days of field experience under the supervision of a trained, experienced supervisor.

What is the duration of a 40-hour HAZWOPER card?
Every year, you must take an 8-hour refresher course to renew your HAZWOPER 40 card. The anniversary
of your issue date is the deadline.

Is On-Site Training Still Required?
Yes. Initial training cannot be completed entirely online, according to OSHA.
This course must be supplemented with the following:

● Three (3) full days of fieldwork under direct supervision. The preceding lessons must be taught
